Zeer enthousiaste recensies MacMillan-cd
In maart 2010 verscheen een prachtige cd met twee werken van James MacMillan op het label BIS. Critici van Luister, Gramophone, International Record Review, Fono Forum en BBC Music Magazine schreven er intussen zeer enthousiaste recensies over.
Op deze sacd zijn de opnamen te beluisteren van Visitatio Sepulchri, uitgevoerd door Radio Kamer Filharmonie en Groot Omroepkoor onder leiding van de componist, en Sun-Dogs door het Groot Omroepkoor onder leiding van zijn chef-dirigent Celso Antunes.
Editor's Choice
Siebe Riedstra recenseert de cd in het juli-/augustusnummer van Luister. Hij geeft uitvoering én registratie ervan het maximum van vijf sterren. Ook is deze uitgave Editor's Choice. Riedstra noemt de opnamen 'een schitterende etalage voor het Groot Omroepkoor... een van de best bewaarde geheimen van muziekland Nederland.'
Sun-Dogs
Over Sun-Dogs schrijft hij: '... er wordt geluisterd, geschreewd, gezucht en gefloten, maar er wordt boven alles prachtig gezongen." Hij eindigt zijn beoordeling 'Een en ander is schitterend opgenomen...'
Gramophone
In de augustus-uitgave van Gramophone verwondert Edward Greenfield zich erover dat '... a Dutch choir can offer such strong and polished performances.' Hiermee doelt hij op de uitstende uitspraak van het Engels. Zijn conclusie luidt: "Altogether a fine coupling of two superb works, a credit to performers and to the BIS recording engineers, who offer sound both clear and atmospheric."
‘Outstanding’
Zijn bespreking van Sun-Dogs in International Record Review eindigt Marc Rochester met: ‘There are passages of great beauty…..and all is handled with a breadth of sound and almost quasi-instrumental range by the outstanding Netherlands Radio Choir under its Brazilian Chief Conductor Celso Antunes.’
‘Fundamental passions’
Over Visitatio Sepulchri schrijft de recensent: “MacMillan urges the Netherlands Radio Chamber Philharmonic players along at a frenetic pace, and they come up trumps in orchestral playing which is of a truly virtuoso aspect. It’s compelling stuff, superbly captured in BIS’s magnificent surround-sound recording, and when the chorus makes its first appearance, almost ten minutes into this 40-minute score, its emergence from the depths of the texture is a thoroughly arresting moment.Altogether this is a stirring disc, presenting music clearly driven by fundamental passions and beliefs in performances which combine technical virtuosity with a real empathy with both the music and the message the composer is putting across.”

Ook David Nice was buitengewoon lovend over de cd. In BBC Music Magazine van september 2010 geeft hij uitvoering en opname beide het maximum van vijf sterren. Hij eindigt zijn recensie met 'It would be hard to imagine a more fervent performance than this, conducted by the composer."
Gastdirigent
Met ingang van 1 september 2010 is James MacMillan vaste gastdirigent van de Radio Kamer Filharmonie.
