Brahms' Symphony No. 2 and Beethoven conducted by Dima Slobodeniouk

Programme

  • Ludwig van Beethoven Meeresstille und glückliche Fahrt
  • Johannes Brahms Second Symphony

While working on the grand Ninth symphony, Beethoven wrote a romantic cantata on a text by Goethe. After his First symphony, mockingly called Beethoven's Tenth, Brahms found his own voice with the Second.

Brahms' Symphony No. 2 and Beethoven

Johannes Brahms took decades to write his First symphony, but after its premiere it was mockingly called Beethoven's Tenth. That criticism died down after the Second symphony, in which he found his own voice completely. It is a high point of Romantic symphonic music. Brahms composed the work during a sun-drenched stay in the Austrian mountains. Consequently, the Second Symphony is cheerful, positive and lovely. Working on the grand Ninth symphony, Beethoven wrote a romantic cantata on a text by Goethe. The cantata consists of two sections: in the first, a ship lies in a dead calm sea, preventing it from sailing. In the second section, the ship can finally begin her journey.
