Amsterdam 750
Amsterdam has been wide open to outside influences for 750 years. The more varied the mix, the stronger the character of the city. Polyphony characterizes Amsterdam. This can be heard in the music. Tania Kross echoes the rich Antillean culture in arias from Katibu di shon, the first opera ever in Papiamentu. In Theo Verbey's Notturno, music from all over the world comes together in an apartment in Amsterdam East.
Louis Andriessen
In Louis Andriessen's The City of Dis, we board a narrator's ship and sail into a hellish city - a city of water and flames. For years, young composers from all over the world traveled to Keizersgracht to take lessons from Andriessen. Some stayed to further enrich the musical life here, such as Calliope Tsoupaki, former composer of the Netherlands, who has lived in Amsterdam for more than 35 years. A new commissioned work by her will be heard.
Bas Wiegers
