Karina Canellakis conducts Stravinsky's Petrushka

Programme

  • Leonard Bernstein Chichester Psalms
  • Igor Stravinsky Petrushka

Karina Canellakis has been praised by the Volkskrant for her "sense of color. That comes in handy in Stravinsky's colorful fairy tale ballet Petrushka, which conjures up enchanting images even without dancers. The Groot Omroepkoor takes center stage in Leonard Bernstein's compelling Chichester Psalms.

Karina Canellakis
American conductor Karina Canellakis has been praised for her "exciting depth," her musical intuition and her "sense of color"
(de Volkskrant). Since she took office as chief conductor of the Radio Philharmonic Orchestra in 2019, conductor and orchestra have been propelling each other to great heights. Accordingly, she recently signed on for another series of seasons as principal conductor with the orchestra.

Stravinsky's Petrushka
Petrushka is one of Igor Stravinsky's most beloved ballets. The fairy tale full of sorcery and magical characters, is a modern classic. The melodies are beautiful and intriguing, the work bursting with rhythmic power. It became one of Stravinsky's great successes. Leonard Bernstein has been in the spotlight all over again since Bradley Cooper's film Maestro. In his Chichester Psalms, his emotional extravagance takes on a religious depth. The large-scale choral work is rhythmically compelling and melodically tremendously catchy.
