Choral Concert Featuring Schnittke and His Contemporaries

Programme

  • Missy Mazzoli Vespers for solo cello (Dutch premiere)
  • Samy Moussa Melancholy's Attributes (Dutch premiere)
  • Ernst Reijseger Colla parte
  • Alfred Schnittke Concerto for Choir

Schnittke’s choral masterpiece and the talented cellist Hadewych van Gent enchant the audience with spiritual laments and soothing soundscapes.

Fervent and Humble
This choral concert culminates in Alfred Schnittke’s monumental *Concerto for Choir*, considered one of the choral masterpieces of the twentieth century. Schnittke based the work on spiritual texts from the Book of Lamentations from the tenth century. The work traces a path from fervent praise and supplication, through human suffering, to a humble closing prayer.

Moussa’s Melancholy
In the Dutch premiere of *Melancholy’s Attributes* for double choir—also based on ancient texts—Samy Moussa explores the various facets of melancholy. Here, the double choir becomes an echo chamber, placing the listener between two soundscapes. Missy Mazzoli’s Vespers for cello and tape (Dutch premiere) is an evening ritual for a single performer and an invisible choir of electronic shadows. For Ernst Reijsegers’ Colla parte for cello and voice, we turn inward, into an intimate duet between instrumentalist and singer.
