CANCELLED due to Coronavirus - Mahler Festival: Quartet movement and Zemlinsky's Die Seejungfrau

Programme

  • Mahler Nicht zu schnell (Quartettsatz)
  • Zemlinsky Die Seejungfrau

Love rivals Mahler and Zemlinsky in one concert. The Radio Philharmonic Orchestra plays Colin Matthews' orchestral arrangement of Mahler's Quartet Part - a youthful work - and Zemlinsky's Die Seejungfrau.

Zemlinsky
Austrian composer Alexander von Zemlinsky was a great admirer of Mahler - and lost his lover to him. He is said to have processed the emotions surrounding this in the symphonic poem Die Seejungfrau. Based on the fairy tale The Little Mermaid by Andersen, he sketches a story of love, suffering and sacrifice. A late-romantic highlight, played by the Radio Philharmonic Orchestra.

Gustav Mahler
Mahler himself is featured through the Quartet movement, the only surviving part of a youthful work for piano and string quartet. Collin Matthews arranged this melancholy miniature for orchestra. The Radio Philharmonic Orchestra is conducted by the young Finnish cellist/conductor Klaus Mäkelä.
