Noa Wildschut plays Saint-Saëns

Programme

  • Grieg's Holberg Suite and Niek Baar plays Ravel's Tzigane
  • Niek Baar
  • Concertgebouw Chamber Orchestra
  • Dvořák Romance for violin and orchestra

Artist in residence' Noa Wildschut is soloist in an all-French programme, with the Third Violin Concerto by Camille Saint-Saëns as central piece. A brilliant piece and effectively written, with plenty of room for exciting violinistic display, and with a first movement full of allusions to gypsy music. Then came Ernest Chausson, a true French Wagner worshipper. He was melancholic and reclusive, and died in a cycling accident at the age of forty-four. His only Symphony from 1890 is full of chromatic opulence and deals with Wagner's themes of life, love and death. Nowhere any French nimbleness, but German heaviness everywhere. Paul Dukas' The Sorcerer's Apprentice opens the programme.
