Radio Philharmonic Orchestra: Beethoven and Brahms

Programme

  • Ludwig van Beethoven Meeresstille und glückliche Fahrt
  • Carl Maria Von Weber Mass in G gr.t. 'Jubelmesse'
  • Johannes Brahms Second Symphony

The joy of creation splashes from Brahms' Second Symphony. Melancholy, rapture and passion alternate in rapid succession. The Radio Philharmonic links Brahms' lush symphony to Von Weber's little-heard Jubelmesse. Finishers are the Groot Omroepkoor and an outstanding cast of soloists.

Creative ingenuity
Johnny laughs and Johnny cries. In his symphonies, Brahms could play with smoothly changing moods like no other. His Second symphony almost boils over with creative ingenuity. The symphony is often described as the sunniest among his large-scale compositions. But there is more. Brahms packs with audible pleasure every conceivable human emotion into four movements: from melancholy to zest for life and from healthy stress to endless longing.

Festive Jubilee Mass
The Radio Philharmonic Orchestra remains in a jubilant mood with a rare performance of Von Weber's Missa Sancta No. 2. This so-called "Jubilee Mass" from 1819 was tailor-made for the golden wedding anniversary of Saxon royal couple Friedrich August and Maria Amalie Auguste. A soloist cast of the outer category pulls out all the stops.
