Sibelius' Kullervo

Programme

  • Ludwig van Beethoven Overture Coriolan
  • Jean Sibelius Kullervo

This concert opens with the dramatic overture in which Beethoven gives musical expression to the duel of the Roman leader Coriolanus. Then you can listen to music that the composer was not allowed to publish during his lifetime: Kullervo by Jean Sibelius. Sibelius got the spark for this unusual opus from a runic singer from Karelia, whom he heard singing folk music that had been preserved orally in 1891. The work started out as an overture based on the Finnish folk epic Kalevala, but developed into a composition in five movements of around eighty minutes, with soprano, baritone, male choir and orchestra. Is Kullervo a symphony, a symphonic poem, a cantata? Rather a happy mixture of all three. Tonight you will hear the work in its entirety!
