Ryan Wigglesworth conducts and composes, a combination that has not been obvious for a long time. It is precisely because of this double function' that he is perhaps an ideal interpreter.
Meet Wigglesworth's Piano Concerto!
The composer-conductor: a combination that is becoming increasingly rare. Ryan Wigglesworth, who has spent a decade with the BBC Symphony Orchestra and has previously led the Radio Philharmonic Orchestra to musical heights, is one of the greats in this select group. This season, the maestro brings his atmospheric and sizzling Piano Concerto to the Netherlands for the first time.
Mozart hands out 'uppercut
Wigglesworth's refined orchestration, varied texture and captivating play on motifs is reflected in the work of two historical tone poets-with-baton. Schubert's Mass in E flat major is the crowning glory of his mature vocal oeuvre, displaying his consummate mastery of writing for chorus in an endless stream of melodic ideas, rich harmonies, impressive counterpoint and a symphonic construction that stands like a house. No less powerful is Mozart's uppercut Kyrie KV 341: an enigmatic composition whose genesis and authenticity are up for debate, but whose outstanding quality rises above all debate.
