Wim T. Schippers' Egmont

Programme

  • Thomas Larcher Love and the fever (Dutch premiere)
  • Ludwig van Beethoven Egmont

Artist, presenter and writer Wim T. Schippers in 2007 created a Dutch version of Egmont, Goethe's tragedy to which Ludwig van Beethoven wrote music.

Involved narrator
Egmont tells of the Dutch nobleman who rebelled against Spanish rule and was executed by order of Duke Alva. This ushered in the Eighty Years' War. In 2007, Schippers himself acted as narrator in his own inimitable way. Less heavy-handed than the great German poet, but full of commitment. He now does so in a performance with the Radio Philharmonic Orchestra.

Meditations on mortality
This work is paired with
Love and the fever by Thomas Larcher. Written for choir and orchestra, it is a commissioned work for the NTR Saturday Matinee, among others. Larcher was inspired by poems by Miyazawa Kenji, meditations on mortality after the death of his sister from tuberculosis, reflected in nature. Love and the fever is a Dutch premiere.
